Charleston sketches from an erratic life
I feel as though I'm leading a good, but interrupted, life, which is scarcely odd, because I am. So, now.... where were we? Back from Charleston, where it was chilly and gray, though we had a lovely time with our English visitors. A busy weekend and busy weeks ahead. Here are a few Charleston scenes. I have a few more, which I will share anon. I will not be traveling again in a big way until late June or early July. Home just in time to enjoy my garden, my family, my friends and to work on my watery theme.
'
Here are the three accordion sketchbooks from my trips to Hawaii, Paris, and Charleston. I like seeing them all together. They have such different feelings and moods. The Charleston one is the most languid.

Beautious as always. And staying home! how different.
Are these accordion books special made or can we purchase them somewhere. They have picqued my interest. A lot.

I'm so glad you are enjoying your new sketchbooks so much and we get to see all of the wonderful, accumulated watercolor paintings! Do you use these as studies for larger works - or are you completely satisfied creating artist's books? Just curious....

Languid is not a word that comes to mind when I look at your drawings Laura! The sketchbooks look wonderful and I especially like the spiky flower.

Love the coffee house sketch.

I love the live oaks and camellias.
The leaves and the many stamens look myrtlesque on the exotic flower, but I've never seen one in pink before! Was it growing in a garden?

All your work is like a refreshing draught of cool water!

Beautiful! The top one -- I can't quite read from here where it was -- really makes me want to pack a bag and head out! It is especially neat to see the three travel sketchbooks spread out together. They ARE different from each other, each with a distinct flavor.

Oh, these are vibrant and rich, Laura! (Is that flower a bottle brush flower? I saw them on my travels a few times.) I always thought they were so appropriately named. I wanted to say my favorite is...but they're all my favorite today. That pavilion is to die for, though.

Funny just noticed these were in Charleston...we almost went there Friday to sketch..its only a couple of hours from here...but we stayed home...would have been perfect weather...not the heat that will set in soon!

You're back! It looks like you were incredibly productive in Charleston. These are really lovely - I can't wait to see the others. And I'm really looking forward to seeing these all in person soon.

Your camellias are really gorgeous, Laura. What a beautiful series of paintings and those foldout books are becoming a real signature.
Looking forward to more!

Lovely camellias.
The accordian sketchbooks look great together. Maybe they should be framed together too?

A big thank you to all you great commenters! Sue, I think it must be a bottle brush flower. That name kept floating through my mind as I wrote in the sketchbook, but I forgot to look it up! Julia, yes, it was in one of the camellia allees. Shirley, good question. I promise to address it soon. I have lots to say on the subject, but not the time right now. Thank you for asking!

SO gorgeous...I delight in your sketches and the way they invite us into Life, capital L!

I love your sketching and painting style and the colors you get out of your watercolors are just beautiful.
I am heading to Charleston at the end of this week and I am hoping to capture spring in the city in my journal. Your colors really captured spring in the south and I am afraid of my Maine palette.
What brand of watercolors do you use?

I just love all your work. I must make myself an accordian sketchbook. I've been thinking that ever since I first saw yours.I must say your watercolours are just scrumptious. The way you use colour is amazing.
