My beloved elderly mother's condition has become precarious. We don't know if this is a short-term situation, or if the recent set of events will prove to be the beginning of permanent disability on her part. I had to leave my reportage illustration workshop yesterday, after just two days, to fly back and help my brother take care of her.
I'd looked forward with greatest anticipation to this workshop since last winter, but when duty phones, you take the call.
I'm leaving early tomorrow to drive to her hometown and the nursing home she's just been installed in. I'll be back and forth for a while, until (and if) her condition stabilizes.
So, here's a sketch from my first morning, pre-workshop, in Orlando.
This weekend I'll post some of what I did at the workshop. It was as stimulating and intense as I'd hoped it would be. There's another workshop offered this January, half in Brooklyn, half in Connecticut, which I plan now to attend. I will not let this goal go unmet!
I'm so sorry to hear that your mother is sick and also that you had to leave your workshop! Beautiful sketches and illustrations. I got the issue of Artful Blogging last week and read your article - very exciting! Congratulations on being published in the issue - what an honor and accomplishment. It is a wonderful magazine as are all of Somerset Studios I'm finding! Expensive, but well worth every penny! Hope your mother improves!

Laura, I'm late to say this but strength and prayers to you and your mom - very hard to go from a high to a low so fast, and I hope all will be well.
What you learned so far from this workshop will be mulled over and ready to burst at the next one - not that energy isn't bursting out of those palm trees already!

Thank you so much for your caring comments. We don't know from one day to the next what her condition will be, but, for today, at least, things seem positive.

Thinking of you Laura. Lean on those around you and don't forget to take care of yourself as you are caring for her. Your palm trees are wonderful!
